چکیده

Abstract We present a deep imaging and spectroscopic search for emission from (3200) Phaethon, large near-Earth asteroid that appears to be the parent of strong Geminid meteoroid stream, using 4.3 m Lowell Discovery Telescope. Observations were conducted on 2017 December 14–18 when Phaethon passed only 0.07 au Earth. determine 3 ? upper level dust CN production rates 0.007–0.2 kg s ?1 2.3 × 10 22 molecules through narrowband imaging. A in broadband images taken SDSS r ? filter shows no 100 class fragments Phaethon’s vicinity. deeper but star-contaminated also sign down 15 m. Optical spectroscopy comet C/2017 O1 (ASASSN) as comparison confirms absence cometary lines yields levels CN, C 2 , ?10 24 –10 25 orders magnitude higher than constraint placed by imaging, due much narrower on-sky aperture spectrographic slit. show could provide an efficient way look weak gas near-extinct bodies near Earth, though these observations require careful interpretation. Assuming behavior is unchanged, our analysis DESTINY + mission, currently planning explore 2026, may not able directly detect coma.

Search for Activity in 3200 Phaethon

We present deep optical imaging of Geminid meteor stream parent 3200 Phaethon taken in search of low-level cometary activity (i.e., coma or dust trail). Although no unambiguous cometary behavior was observed, we find an upper limit on the object’s cometary mass-loss rate of Ṁlim 0:01 kg s . The corresponding active fraction (the fraction of the surface area that could consist of freely sublimat...

An upper limit on gas production from 3200 Phaethon

Asteroid 3200 Phaethon resembles a comet in some ways, including a highly-eccentric orbit (e∼ 0.89) and a strong associated meteor shower (the Geminids). Yet this object has never been observed to exhibit any cometary activity, i.e., gas production. We observed 3200 Phaethon with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on two occasions, once while it was near its closest approach to Earth as it n...

Recurrent Perihelion Activity in (3200) Phaethon

We present a study of planet-crossing asteroid (3200) Phaethon at three successive perihelia in 2009, 2010, and 2012, using the NASA STEREO spacecraft. Phaethon is clearly detected in 2009 and 2012, but not in 2010. In both former years, Phaethon brightened unexpectedly by ∼1 mag at large phase angles, inconsistent with the ∼1 mag of steady fading expected from a discrete, macroscopic body over...

An HST Search for Lyman Continuum Emission From Galaxies at 1 . 1 < z < 1 . 4

If enough of their Lyman limit continuum escapes, star-forming galaxies could be significant contributors to the cosmic background of ionizing photons. To investigate this possibility, we obtained the first deep imaging in the far ultraviolet of eleven bright blue galaxies at intermediate redshift (1.1 < z < 1.4) with the STIS FUV MAMA detector on the Hubble Space Telescope. No Lyman continuum ...

Deep Impact: excavating comet Tempel 1.

Deep Impact collided with comet Tempel 1, excavating a crater controlled by gravity. The comet's outer layer is composed of 1- to 100-micrometer fine particles with negligible strength (<65 pascals). Local gravitational field and average nucleus density (600 kilograms per cubic meter) are estimated from ejecta fallback. Initial ejecta were hot (>1000 kelvins). A large increase in organic materi...
